On 21st February 2024, Bayern Munich announced that they would be splitting from manager Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season. In a statement released by the club, they confirmed that the decision to end Tuchel’s term at the club is a mutual one, with the talks being positive. 

Tuchel previously was at Chelsea, where he won the Champions League in his very first season. He replaced the outgoing Julian Nagelsmann in March 2023, signing a contract will 2023, and won the Bundesliga in his very first season.

Sadly things have not been good for Bayern, as they sit 2nd in the Bundesliga, eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen. They might endure their first season without the Bundesliga title in over 12 years, last losing in 2012. Along with that, they have already finished as runner-ups in the DFL Supercup and knocked out by 1.FC Saarbrucken in the DFB Pokal. The news comes just days after losing 3-2 to VFL Bochum.

In the statement released by Bayern, the club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said he had a “good,  open discussion” with the German coach, in which both agreed to finish his contract a year early. He also clarified that Tuchel alone was not at fault for the poor form Bayern are in, saying the players had a hand in it as well.

When the news of Thomas Tuchel leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season was released many fans openly mocked the 50-year-old. Many claimed he was overrated and a fraud, thanks to the poor form Bayern are in. Some called his achievement of winning the Champions League with Chelsea a “fluke,” as Chelsea also declined when he was manager.

Many fans commented how Bayern and Tuchel would not work and expected his sacking. They also criticized Bayern for sacking Julian Nagelsmann, who was then replaced by Tuchel.

Tuchel is the 3rd manager from a top team to leave their club at the end of the season. Jurgen Klopp announced he was taking a break from football and Xavi Hernandez decided to leave Barcelona. Now the club will begin the search for his successor. As of now, the favorite is Xabi Alonso, who is in Bayer Leverkusen.
