Leicester City player, Hamza Choudhury has apologized for any offense caused by his post on ‘X’, which has been interpreted by many as pro-Palestinian. Critics have taken the post to mean extremist which the player has clarified ‘is not the case’. Hamza Choudhury uploaded a photo of the Palestine flag on ‘X’ with the caption, “From the river to the sea”.
After noticing the backlash he was facing for his post, the Choudhury did not delete the post instead uploaded a statement that read:
It was and is not my intention to cause offense to anyone...I share the hope of people around the world that a peaceful resolution can bring an end to the ongoing suffering of innocent people in this conflict.
The FA has since then taken notice of the player’s post and is considering whether it breaches any regulations in place.
Hamza Choudhury’s club, Leicester City have also released a statement on the situation clarifying and discussing with the player, that the posting of such an image – which often without context – is open to misinterpretation and can cause offense to certain sections in different communities. The club ended their statement:
The thoughts of Leicester City Football Club remain with all the innocent victims of the tragic events unfolding in Israel and Palestine, their families, and the communities affected.
Hamza Choudhury – regardless of the issue – remains important for Leicester City as he played the full 90 minutes in the club’s 2-1 win against QPR in the Championship.
Twitter reacts to Hamza Chodhury’s apology
After Hamza Choudhury posted his apology on ‘X’, he faced significant hate in the comments. Yet, a small but vocal group is supporting him. They’re critical of football governing bodies for penalizing players who speak up for Palestine while not objecting to players supporting Ukraine against Russia. Similarly, players have shown support for Israel right now without any repercussions however fans have shown backlash.
Here are some of the reactions:
Hamza Choudhury is not the only player who has made his opinion known. Oleksandr Zinchenko came in support of Israel which was met with widespread criticism forcing the player to delete his Instagram story. Since then many players who have made public statements have been met with criticism and have been told by the fans to “Stick to Football.”
