“Karma for 2010, VAR has been a massive joke”- Fans react after Japan beats Spain with a controversial winning goal at 2022 FIFA World Cup
Japan vs Spain
Japan faced Spain in the Group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. While the Japanese were given a controversial decision for a goal during the second half against the Spaniards they took a 2-1 advantage over them. The goal played a massive role in sending the Japanese through to the knockout stage as Group E winners and also ensured the Germans were sent back home on goal difference.
The particular Group E match was the most exciting as in a single game, Spain lost their number 1 throne, Japan crawled to the top while the Germans were declared out. Having just scored the equalizer in the 48th minute, the winger Ritsu Doan took the ball and went towards the goal, Kaoru Mitoma drag passed the ball towards Ao Tanaka to knee it inside the goal only to find that the ball ran out of play before the assist.
The VAR later checked the controversial goal and was given in favor of the Japanese who wrote the history of Group E themselves. Several pundits and fans online have questioned the decision and VAR is to blame in all the comments. Even Manchester United legend Gary Neville tweeted with a suspicious call to the goal that was allowed, in their favor. People from across the world have divided over the judgment that eventually decided the fate of not one but two nations.
Twitter reactions after Japan was given a controversial goal that led to Germany’s exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup
IFAB, who set the rules of the game, decided the ball was out as when “it has wholly passed over the goal line or touchline on the ground or in the air”. However, Twitter has found the funny side of it as always, and comments rain over the controversial decision, criticizing the VAR and the referee as well who gave the decision listening to his earpiece but didn’t have a look at the screen himself.
