“He’d probably still get in Liverpool’s midfield”- Fans react as Steven Gerrard mocks Celtic fans after scoring penalty
Fans react after Steven Gerrard mocks Celtic fans after converting from the spot
Liverpool Legends ran out 2-0 winners over Celtic at Anfield on Saturday as the Reds’ stars rolled back the years. Steven Gerrard opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Martin Skrtel was brought down in the box before Mark Gonzalez maintained his sensational scoring run in Legends football by doubling the lead with a well-taken finish moments after the restart.
As a former Rangers manager who denied Celtic a famous ‘10-in-a-row’, Steven Gerrard was always ridiculed by the Celtic fans during his managerial stint at Scotland. “If you hate Steven Gerrard, clap your hands,” was one early chant from the away fans as they took every opportunity to mock Gerrard, be it booing his touches or his misplaced passes.
Nevertheless, the Englishman had the last laugh after converting his spot kick and celebrated his goal in front of the travelling Celtic fans. But upon doing so, Gerrard was subjected to a handful of water bottles and plastic cups as Celtic supporters were left visibly disgruntled by the former Rangers manager’s celebration.
During Gerrard’s time in charge at Rangers, he led them to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021, ending years of dominance by Celtic. The LFC Foundation charity match aimed to raise funds for the foundation and its partner charities, funding programs across schools, inclusive sports, social action, health, wellbeing, and food poverty.

Rewinding Steven Gerrard’s career at Liverpool
Gerrard started his career at Liverpool and made his first-team debut in 1998 when he was just 18 years old. He quickly became a star player and was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2001 League Cup victory. After taking over as captain of Liverpool in 2003, Gerrard spent his entire playing career there, helping the team to some of their most famous triumphs.
Gerrard is one of the best players to have ever featured for Liverpool and bagged an incredible 186 goals and 154 assists in 710 appearances for the club. In 2005, the ace was part of Rafa Benitez’s team that overcame a 3-0 half-time deficit against AC Milan in the Champions League final to stun the Italian team and lift the trophy. The 42-year-old also lifted the UEFA Cup trophy as well as two FA Cups and three League Cups during his time as a player at Anfield.
He hung up his boots in 2017 and went on to manage Aston Villa following his stint at Rangers but was sacked earlier this season after less than a year in charge at Villa Park. He is currently out of work and most recently played in a charity match against Celtic.
