Inter Miami reportedly have agreed on a deal with Gremio’s Luis Suarez which will see the player reunite with his former Barcelona and treble-winning teammate, Lionel Messi. The Uruguayan’s contract with the club ends on the 31st of December 2023.
Renato Gaucho, current manager of Gremio confirmed the departure of the 36-year-old forward last month, after joining the side back in December of 2022. Rumors linking Suarez to Inter Miami first came to light after the player admitted his inability to physically keep up with the demands required to play in the Brazilian League.
Now it seems the deal is set to occur as the manager, Gerardo “Tata” Martino has confirmed the club’s interest in the player stating:
When the moment arrives to make Suárez's situation….we'll be prepared to go in the corresponding direction.
A move to Inter Miami could reunite the player with Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. Yet, the outcome is uncertain. These ex-Barcelona stars are nearing retirement and have been prone to injuries in the later MLS season. Still, when they play together, Inter Miami becomes formidable. Adding Luis Suarez might boost their playoff chances next season.
More news on the transfer is awaited as the MLS season for next year is still a couple of months away and Inter Miami will be hoping to acquire Luis Suarez on a free transfer, thus waiting till the end of the year to approach the player.
Twitter Reacts to Luis Suarez’s potential transfer to Inter Miami
With a possible reunion of the 2015-16 Treble-winning Barcelona team, several Barca fans are excited to see the four players on the pitch once more, this time in the colors of Inter Miami. However, a section of fans has also mocked this transfer news calling the MLS a retirement home as well as labeling Messi a ‘system player’ mocking him for needing more, former Barcelona players to succeed in the league.
Here are some of the reactions:
Inter Miami’s inability to make the MLS playoffs disappointed many. They spent big on Messi, Busquets, and Alba, winning a trophy, but not much else. Now, with the prospect of signing Suarez, they aim to continue their short-term success and ease the pressure on Messi.
