Manchester City thrashed league rivals Sheffield United 3-0 in the FA Cup semi-finals. Algerian wideman Riyad Maharez’s hattrick and the subsequent return to form was one of the key point for Pep Guardiola and company as they secured a spot in the finals of the FA Cup.
Sheffield United had a great chance to go in front inside the two minutes when a corner found its way to Oliver Norwood’s feet in the box. But his tame effort was saved comfortably by City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. Man City began to dominate the ball but were unable to create any clear-cut chances. They were awarded a penalty five minutes before half-time for Daniel Jebbison clumsily hacking down Bernardo Silva in the box. Riyad Maharez took the penalty and scored into the bottom corner.
Mancity doubled their lead early in the second half in the 61mins mark, as Maharez picked the ball from the middle of the park. He ran straight into the defence and slot the ball past the goalkeeper. Mahrez scored his hattrick in the 66th minute with an emphatic finish from Jack Grealish’s pass in the box.
Riyad’s hat trick today was the first one in the semi-finals of the FA Cup since Alex Dawson. Dawson scored the hattrick for Manchester United in a replay against Fulham at Highbury in 1958. Mahrez also became the oldest player in the history of the competition to score a hat trick.
