Title challenger Arsenal has been struggling form as the year ends. Mikel Arteta’s side has just won two of their last five games and worked to maintain possession against 13th-placed Fulham. Playing at home in Craven Cottage, Fulham dominated the game.
Marco Silva’s side looked dangerous from the game’s first minute, constantly challenging Arsenal with high-pressure and line-breaking passes. Arsenal opened the scoring in the game with a shot taken by Gabriel Martinelli, which fell into Bukayo Saka‘s feet, who converted the rebound shot. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno made full efforts to save the initial image but succumbed to the second right-foot finish from the English forward.
However, things went downhill for the Gunners as Raul Jimenez equalized the game with a stunning cross from Cairney, who former Arsenal player Willian set up. The Mexican had been toying with the Arsenal defenders all fun and finished comfortably past David Raya. Things looked lively from Arsenal’s duo of Saka and Odegaard combining on the right flank but to no effect.
The situation went from bad to worse in the second half as Bobby De Cordova-Reid scored from a loose ball from a corner in the 59th minute. Arsenal tried to attack and reach the Fulham box but couldn’t find the finishing touch to win the game. In this crucial season phase, Arsenal has dropped massive points, which will sting them as they end an improved campaign in 2023.
