Real Madrid and Manchester City draw 1-1 in the first leg of the UCL semi-finals 2023. Although both teams tried their very best the winning goal did never come for either side. The first semi-final was a blockbuster clash as two of football’s greatest managers Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola go head-to-head. Both clubs are without key defenders tonight as Éder Militão and Nathan Aké miss out.
However, all eyes were on the attack as a record-setting Erling Haaland goes up against Karim Benzema and Vinícius Júnior. The visitors had been in control of the pitch as Kevin De Bruyne called international team-mate Thibaut Courtois into a save before the goalkeeper also denied Rodri. A rising Haaland then had a soft shot and a header also saved near the 15-minute mark, while Madrid’s attack was lifeless. Vinícius almost combined with Benzema following a City mistake at the back. But Ruben Dias cleared the ball away thanks to a perfectly timed tackle.
Real Madrid, however, eventually scored against the run of play when Luka Modrić set Eduardo Camavinga on the counter. And Vinícius then struck from range for 1-0 in the 37th minute.
Coming out into the second half Manchester City reportedly tried to take control of the pitch again. But Courtois denied De Bruyne an equaliser before David Alaba’s block stopped Haaland. Yet instead, it’s been Madrid’s turn to dominate possession with 69% of the ball the second opening 20 minutes. But Madrid stepped off as City pressed, seeing De Bruyne mirror Vinícius’ goal and strike from range for 1-1. With time running out, the match continued to be a nervy affair and Benzema was inches away from another for Madrid but Ederson’s strong hand denied his header.
