Manchester United has made headlines yet again after being named “the most expensively assembled squad”. As per the CIES Football calculations, the club put in approximately $1,234 million to assemble the current set of players. To the surprise of many, in spite of the ‘incessant’ spending in the transfer market, West London club Chelsea failed to secure the top spot.
The CIES Football Observatory has calculated the final figure after taking into consideration the players in the squad as of 11 September 2023. After taking into consideration the transfer fee and any add-ons included, CIES Football reports that Machester United spent $441 million in their attacking department but surprisingly the $411 million spent on defensive reinforcements is the highest among any club. This includes the record fees for Harry Maguire and World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez.
However, it is PSG who has spent the most on attacking players with $598 million worth of investment on attackers. United is one of the four clubs in world football that has spent over the one billion mark to build the squad, the others being Chelsea, PSG, and Manchester City.

Several fans have confused the concept of squad value to the cost of assembling and have pointed out the names of clubs like City and Real Madrid who should have been on the list. However, since several clubs bring in high-value players on free transfers, the squad value does not always reflect in squad expenditure. Real Madrid, who has the most valuable squad in the world, is only eighth in terms of money spent on building the squad.

Fans react to CIES Football’s valuation of Manchester United
After bringing in big-name signings like Rasmus Højlund, Antony and Mason Mount, Manchester United has failed to replicate the success proportionate to the transfers. A fan said that the Red Devils have the most valuable squad in the world, but also have the most valuable flop.
Another fan hilariously took a dig at the Glazers and their relationship with the fans, saying that fans still want the Glazers out in spite of all their spending. Here are some of the reactions.

Manchester United now faces Brighton after the International break, but with Jadon Sancho ‘exiled’ from the first team and Antony suspended till further investigation, United do find themselves in a pickle.
The club has spent excessively on transfers but poor performances and strife within the club have forced fans to turn on the owners and the club become subject to trolls on social media.
