It has been alleged that five players from Belgium‘s World Cup squad have taken early flights back home amid reports of turmoil in the camp. The Red Devils were knocked out of the tournament in the group stage after drawing 0-0 with Croatia on Thursday.
Substitute Romelu Lukaku had a poor performance, missing four clear chances, and had to be comforted by assistant coach Thierry Henry. Morocco won the group, while Croatia finished a point above Belgium. Even in their opening victory against Canada, the Belgians appeared sluggish, and soon reports began to come out of fighting in the team following the Morocco defeat.
Reports have emerged suggesting that some Belgium football players have chosen to make their travel arrangements instead of returning with the team. Thomas Meunier, Axel Witsel, Jeremy Doku, Arthur Theate, and Lois Openda all paid for their tickets back from Qatar and are believed to have already arrived in Brussels before the rest of their teammates.
Belgium is currently holding a high position in the global rankings and had a successful 2018 World Cup, securing the third-place spot. Nevertheless, with an average age of 31 years and 95 days in the Croatia match – the oldest at a World Cup since 2010 – it appears that the golden generation of Belgian football has ended.

Romelu Lukaku failed to capitalize on several late opportunities. Belgium was eliminated from the World Cup in the initial round after a 0-0 draw with Croatia on Thursday, sending the 2018 finalists to the elimination stage. Croatia had a penalty call reversed by the VAR early in the first half. Lukaku’s entry at the half prompted a more exciting game. However, he botched three chances as Croatia held on to advance. Croatia was second in Group F, with Morocco taking first place after beating Canada 2-1, also going to the next round.
Roberto Martinez made several alterations to his squad, including benching captain Eden Hazard, for their opening match in Qatar. Dries Mertens and Leandro Trossard were among the new starters for the game, and the Belgian side was fortunate to come away with the win, having scored only a single goal.
Croatia nearly got on the scoreboard in the first 10 seconds, as a pass was made to Ivan Perisic from the kick-off. The Tottenham player then maneuvered inside and fired a shot, but it missed the far post. When Morocco scored in Doha, it made qualifying even more difficult for Belgium.
