‘Straight to business’ – probably what Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz was thinking when he took that bullet of a shot against France in the opening seconds on Saturday. That being said, football X was witness to a screamer of a goal in the seventh second of the game between France and Germany.
The Die Mannschaft pulled off a 2-0 win against the 2018 World Cup winners thanks to goals from Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz. While Havertz’s goal was good in it’s own regard, Wirtz’s strike was so unexpected that neither player nor opposition could fully comprehend what had transpired. Straight after kick-off, Toni Kroos found Wirtz unmarked in the heart of France’s half.
As the ball fell to the latter’s feet, he quickly glanced up before unleashing a belter of a shot. His strike came so out of the blue that France keeper Brice Samba stood rooted to his spot.
The early setback proved to be the undoing of the hosts, as they failed to make a comeback, let alone find the net in the 90 minutes that followed. The game ended 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Germany beat France as Toni Kroos returns to international action
Toni Kroos chose to hang up his boots for the national team back in 2021, after a disastrous campaign in the 2021 European Championship. However, as the country prepares to host the competition in 2024, Kroos has made a U-turn, and has returned to the Die Mannschaft. It took him just a few seconds from kick-off to prove just how good he is with the ball.
The Germany No.8 looked up to find Florian Wirtz free of his marker in the opposition half, and he expertly proceeded to feed the ball to his teammate. The early goal gave the visitors a stronghold on the game, following which they doubled their lead through Kai Havertz in the 49th minute. Despite Kylian Mbappe and co.’s repeated efforts, the German defense stood firm.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen and his defense managed to keep only their second clean sheet in their last 7 games. They ended a slew of three games without a win and two back-to-back losses, against Turkiye and Austria. The Germans, despite their impressive display against France, have a lot to sort out before the start of the Euros on 15th June.
