Former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde returns to La Liga; set to manage Athletic Bilbao in 2022-23

Former Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde Makes his return to management after being sacked by Barcelona in January 2020. The 58-year-old will take charge of the Athletic Club for the third time in his career.

Valverde was in charge of Athletic Bilbao Club from 2013 to 2017 before being appointed the manager of Barcelona. Newly-elected Athletic president Jon Uriarte has promised to bring the Spaniard back during the elections and he did so after winning earlier this week.

Ernesto Valverde beats off Marcelo Bielsa to be appointed the new coach of Athletic Club

Marcelo Bielsa was another top target for Athletic Club and would have become their manager should Jon Uriarte have lost the presidential elections. However, Ernesto Valverde now returns and will hope to continue the success he found with the club in his previous spell.

Ernesto Valverde won the Spanish Super Cup with Athletic Club in 2016 while also leading them to European football twice in his stint from 2013 to 2017 while managing to qualify for the Champions League in 2014 as well.

In his last two stints, Valverde managed over 300 games for Athletic Club, more than any other manager in the club’s history. After over 2 years without work, the Spaniard will aim to start his latest chapter in Spain with some success.

Last season, Athletic Club missed out on a European spot by just 4 points. The club will hope that Valverde can turn their fortunes around and bring success back to the Athletic Club.
