Ex-Cardiff City defender, Jack Simpson, has been banned for eight games after admitting that he racially abused Rohan Luthra, a former Cardiff team-mate while he was still with the club in pre-season in August 2023. Simpson has also been fined 8000 Euros by the FA for breaching its primary rules.

At 26, Simpson is a free agent since leaving Cardiff in August. His Cardiff contract, originally until summer 2024, got canceled by “mutual agreement.” Starting at Bournemouth, he played 35 games before joining Rangers in 2021, then moved to Cardiff in August 2022 after 14 appearances with the Scottish team. Unfortunately, Simpson faced criticism for mistreating Rohan Luthra, a 21-year-old British goalkeeper of South Asian origin.

During Cardiff’s pre-season trip to Portugal, a troubling incident occurred. Danny Simpson, under the influence of alcohol, violated FA rule E3 by making a racially offensive remark about color and race, constituting an ‘aggravated breach’ of FA rules. The incident unfolded during breakfast when Simpson, for no apparent reason, referred to Luthra using a derogatory term. Luthra, understandably hurt and angered, promptly reported the incident after leaving the table.

An Independent Regulatory Commission found the player guilty and imposed the punishment. Rohan’s father and many others described this incident as ‘unacceptable’ and acknowledged the punishment handed to Jack Simpson. Cardiff City and the FA acted swiftly on this matter.

Ex-Cardiff player, Jack Simpson used a racial slur despite having a girlfriend of South Asian origin

Former Cardiff City defender, Jack Simpson has been suspended for six matches and fined after he admitted using racist language towards a Cardiff team-mate, Rohan Luthra. The incident took place during Cardiff’s pre-season tour in Portugal and the Independent Regulatory Commission noted that it was done so while Simpson was in a relationship with his girlfriend of Asian origin too.

Simpson has since received more criticism for using inappropriate language unintentionally. He later admitted feeling embarrassed, recognizing that it was wrong, given the similar insults her family had faced in the past. These words can discourage young players from South Asian backgrounds.

In 2020, Rohan Luthra made history by signing a contract for the Premier League club Crystal Palace. He was the first-ever British South Asian at the time to sign. He remains the sole goalkeeper from the community to play in the Championship until now.
