Former Newcastle United player Jetro Willems was assaulted by one of his own fans as his side Groningen lost 2-0 at home to Heerenveen in the Eredivisie. The assailant has since been arrested.

Mayhem erupted at the Euroborg Stadion in the 80th minute when fans invaded the pitch in anger as the home side trailed 2-0 against the side from Heerenveen. As the game was stopped, stewards made an effort to control the angry fans. However, when Willems went near the stands trying to calm his supporters down, a man stepped forward and punched him in the face. Thankfully, Willems didn’t seem to be seriously hurt and continued trying to negotiate with the fans.

Due to security fears, the referees sent the players down the tunnel trying to control the situation. After the stadium cooled down, the teams walked back out onto the pitch as Herenveen secured an easy win.

Jetro Willems joined Groningen in February and has played regularly for the club ever since. The Dutch full-back has also made multiple appearances for the national team in the past but his last game for the Netherlands was way back in 2016.

Groningen currently sits 17th on the Eredivisie table as they fear relegation. Heerenveen, however, is comfortable in mid-table sitting at ninth.

Newcastle United dreamed of Champions League football next season as they beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 in stoppage time. A cool, calm brace from Alexander Isak was enough for the Magpies to secure the hard-fought victory.

After a sensational finish from Emmanuel Dennis gave Forest the lead, Isak equalized in the first half’s stoppage time with a flick off his right boot. At the end of a tense second half, the game turned in Newcastle’s favor as they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time for a handball from Moussa Niakhate. Isak stepped up to take the penalty and scored as Newcastle United won in the dying minutes.

Newcastle United currently sit in fifth place with 47 points only two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. They would be hoping for a top-four finish with 12 games left to play in the season.
