Lionel Messi, in the later stages of his career, has become a World Cup champion. During the exciting game, the Argentinian star scored two of the team’s three goals, helping them tie the score at 3-3 with Kylian Mbappe and pushing the game into a penalty shootout. The South Americans became the second nation ever to win the World Cup after suffering defeat in their first match, after Spain in 2010. This came despite their shock loss to Saudi Arabia in the group stage.

In a remarkable two minutes, the 23-year-old changed the course of the game, scoring two goals to lead France out of a difficult situation. When Nicolás Otamendi committed a foul on Randal Kolo Muani, who was on a breakaway down the left side, France were awarded a penalty. Just as Messi was expected to step up for Argentina, Mbappe did the same for France.

Mbappe created history by becoming the second player to net three goals at a World Cup, delivering one of the most remarkable matches of all time. After thirty minutes of additional play, the score line was tied at 3-3, and the victor would be determined by a penalty shootout.
