According to Gareth Southgate, Harry Maguire will be in that starting XI when Gareth Southgate selects his team for England’s World Cup opener against Iran on Monday.
Never mind that he hasn’t been participating in Premier League action, and never mind that he erred in the September 3-3 Nations League tie with Germany. The manager has chosen a team that includes players in whom he has faith and who have consistently performed admirably at major competitions.
And even if they exclude the Germany game, which destroyed his confidence, has Maguire failed England? No. He was a key contributor to England’s run to the semi-final in Russia four years ago, and Southgate still views him as a vital member of his team.
Harry Maguire to play a crucial role for Gareth Southgate’s England:
The England boss, Southgate also added, explaining himself, “Let’s look at the central defenders in the squad: Maguire, John Stones, Eric Dier, Ben White and Conor Coady. John Stones is in and out at Manchester City, Ben White plays as a right back at Arsenal, so he is not accustomed to playing centre-half in an England shirt, while Conor Coady? Everton are having a soft time at the moment and Eric Dier has also not been in the best of form.”
“He has had time away with injury but United manager Erik Teg Hag, who sees him every day, still had faith to make him skipper. And Gareth Southgate will show the same faith”, Gareth stated.
Maguire, along with Jordan Pickford, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Harry Kane, would be among the first five players included on the team sheet, according to Gareth.
