According to Gerard Pique, Lionel Messi always planned to play in the MLS after his stint in Europe came to an end. The 36-year-old joined David Beckham-owned Inter Miami after leaving PSG for free this summer. He rejected a return to Barcelona due to their financial condition.

In a recent interview, Pique said, “Years ago in the locker room he mentioned the fact that when he stopped competing in Europe his idea was to go to the United States. And more in a market like Miami where I think he feels very comfortable.” (H/T: Diario AS)

Lionel Messi has put MLS in a chokehold. His arrival to the country has not been anything short of spectacular. His first appearance was from the bench against Cruz Azul in the League Cup. The score was tied at 1-1 when he came on. In the dying minutes, he delivered a beautiful free kick to win the match for Inter Miami. But his second appearance was even better.

He started the game against Atlanta United showing his full class to the crowd. Within the first 25 minutes of the game, he scored twice giving a 2-0 lead to Miami. It felt like the Argentine was playing against amateurs. His showing did not end there as he provided an assist to Robert Taylor just before the end of halftime. He provided another assist to Taylor, before being subbed off in the 78th minute after a masterful performance. In these two games, he already has five goal contributions. He needs just 27 goals more to break Gonzalo Higuain’s record of the highest goalscorer in Inter Miami history.

Gerard Pique also talked about the possibility of Lionel Messi playing in the Kings League. The league was started by him last year with Twitch streamer Ibai Llanos. It has gained massive popularity already.

Many legends have already taken part in it including Andrea Pirlo and Sergio Aguero. On Messi’s involvement, Pique said, “Why not? In the end, Kun tells me many times why not try it. I know that he is a brother to Kun and he is very connected with him.  We will see in the future, why not?”

It remains to be seen if the World Cup winner appears in the League. It’ll also be interesting to witness how his skills will translate there with all the unique rules present.
