On Friday, Gregg Berhalter was officially reintroduced as the coach of the US men’s national team. He openly recognized the need to mend his relationship with Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Giovanni Reyna. During the World Cup in Qatar, Berhalter scarcely utilized Reyna on the field which led to widespread criticisms in the country.

Additionally, Berhalter disclosed that an unnamed player’s lack of dedication almost led to them being left out of the team. This was supposed to be confidential.

During the World Cup, it was later revealed that the anonymous player mentioned by Berhalter was indeed Gio Reyna. Following Berhalter’s comments, Danielle Reyna, Gio’s mother, informed US Soccer that the coach and his current wife, Rosalind, were involved in a domestic violence incident during their college years. Addressing the situation, Berhalter stated on Friday to reporters that he recognizes the need for improvement and acknowledges Gio’s significance as a player to the team.

“I wanna get the best out of him – we wanna get the best out of him, and we know that if we can unlock his talents, he’s gonna be a game changer for this program. So there’s work to do, and part of it is working together with [sporting director] Matt [Crocker], and trying to rebuild a relationship, that we know will be important moving forward,” Berhalter said that he had not spoken with Reyna since the conclusion of the World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund to offload Gio Reyna

Gio Reyna has endured a very challenging season. His employer, Dortmund, suffered a heartbreaking and embarrassing defeat in their quest for the Bundesliga title. While Reyna had very limited playing time. Moreover, he became embroiled in controversies within the international arena, further adding to the difficulties he faced during the season.

According to BILD, there are reports suggesting that Dortmund is contemplating selling Reyna during the upcoming summer transfer window. This development may not come as a major surprise. It seems like a logical decision for both the club and the player with coach Edin Terzic not too keen on the player.

It is yet to be seen where Reyna plays next season. He remains a talented prospect on the European stage. At just 20, Reyna has time on his side but since his meteoric rise to fame, he has been underperforming. It would be a huge blessing for both the player and the USMNT if he can come back to form.
