In a shocking revelation, Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, announced a major change in team captaincy on Sunday. Ten Hag stripped off the captaincy role from Harry Maguire after a long tenure of three and a half years at the “Theatre of Dreams.”
Maguire thanked former Manchester United manager and club legend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who entrusted him with the premier league giants’ captaincy. He took over social media and emphasized the fact that he had dedicated himself to his role and contributed all his best efforts to the club’s success.
Maguire has expressed his personal disappointment on Twitter but pledged to continue performing well for the club for the rest of his days. He thanked the Manchester United fans for their good support and acknowledge the privilege and honor to be in the lead of such a club.
A look at the possible contention for the new captaincy role at Manchester United
As the news to strip off Maguire from captaincy for Manchester United was announced by Ten Hag, fans are looking forward to the Dutchman’s decision to hand over the captaincy of the team. The manager is reportedly looking to sell Maguire in the summer transfer window in order to raise funds for new signings.
The club has already signed Mason Mount from Chelsea and is currently close to finalizing the contract for goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan. It is also reported that Ten Hag is interested in signing a striker as Rasmus Hojlun from Atlanta is a potential target.
Bruno Fernandes is expected to be named as the new captain. Maguire is upset and disappointed but vowed to offer the new upcoming captain his blessings and good wishes. The new captain is yet to be announced officially by the manager.
