Paul Scholes called the Brazilian forward a “one-trick pony” and criticised the play of Manchester United’s wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho. Erik ten Hag used the pair as wide players against Omonia in the Europa League on Thursday night as well as in the derby loss to Manchester City last weekend.

Marcus Rashford scored twice to help Ten Hag’s team avoid a major setback in Cyprus, but Antony and Sancho once more found it difficult to have an influence. Sancho was substituted during the break in Nicosia, while Antony, who this summer was said to have cost over £80 million to acquire from Ajax, was later replaced by Fred.

Scholes, a former midfielder for Manchester United, was dissatisfied with the wingers’ recent displays and concurred with Ten Hag’s post-game assessment that Sancho and Antony had played too passively against Omonia.

“He was right about the wingers being static,” Scholes said . “Sancho never really runs in behind. He needs a fast left-back really or a centre forward to link up with and he hasn’t really got that at the moment.

“Antony on the other side as well, he doesn’t run in behind. He seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony.

“He’s always cutting inside and either passing back to the full-back or having a shot. You’re thinking he needs to develop a little bit. It’s still early days for him, we know that.”

Paul Scholes is not satisfied with Manchester United’s forwards

Antony and Sancho

When Sancho joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in July of last year, he was a highly anticipated summer addition to the team, just like Antony was. But due to his lack of consistency, the young England international was dropped from Gareth Southgate’s most recent selection.

When Manchester United fell down at Neil Lennon’s Omonia, it appeared as though their chances of moving on to the knockout stages of the competition would suffer a serious blow after they had previously been defeated by Real Sociedad in Europa League Group E.

Ten Hag was happy with his team’s tenacity, though, as they overcame Karim Ansarifard’s opening goal after the break to win 3-2 on the road. Ten Hag said of the overall showing in Cyprus. “This can always happen – football is a game of mistakes.

“The first 30 minutes we played quite well, the only thing we didn’t do was score a goal – when you score a goal you make your life easy.

“We didn’t, then we conceded a goal and it was the worst 10 minutes of the game from us. After half-time, we dealt well with the setback.”

With nine points, Real Sociedad leads the group by three points over Manchester United. On Sunday, Ten Hag’s team will play Everton in the Premier League at Goodison Park.
