Here’s how Wojceich Szczesny lost a bet despite saving Lionel Messi’s penalty in 2022 FIFA World Cup

Following their first-half collision in Wednesday’s World Cup game, Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny said he bet Lionel Messi €100 that the referee would not award Argentina a penalty. Despite losing the match, Szczesny has no intention of making good on his gamble.

In the World Cup Group C match, Szczesny collided with Messi while attempting to deflect a cross toward goal, resulting in a penalty for Argentina. Speaking after the game, Szczesny said that while the sides were awaiting the judgement of the video assistant referee, who opted to award the penalty, he placed a €100 bet with Messi.

“I told him I can bet him a €100 that he (the referee) wasn’t going to give it. So I’ve lost a bet against Messi. I don’t know if that’s allowed at the World Cup and I’m probably going to get banned for it but I don’t care right now. And I’m not going to pay him either! He doesn’t care about €100, come on.” Szczesny said after the game.

At the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, Lionel Messi led his team to victory in a key Group C encounter, reaching new heights in his illustrious football career. The Argentine legend has outperformed his hero Diego Maradona on the biggest platform by accomplishing another significant feat. At the FIFA World Cup, the superstar of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) made his 22nd appearance for La Albiceleste.

Messi is playing in his fifth World Cup campaign for the two-time champions, becoming Argentina’s most-capped player in FIFA World Cup history. The 35-year-old accomplished the enormous achievement when Argentina faced Poland, who was captained by Robert Lewandowski, in the Group C match at Stadium 974.

After scoring the first goal for the South American powerhouses versus Mexico, Messi has matched Maradona’s total of FIFA World Cup goals. With his spectacular goal against Mexico at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, Messi also tied Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup goal total. It’s interesting to note that the Argentina captain is the oldest (35 years 155 days against Mexico) and youngest (18 years 357 days) player to have both scored and assisted in a single World Cup game since the 1966 tournament.
