Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes might have replaced Harry Maguire as the captain of the club. Maguire was handed over the responsibility by ex-United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer way back in 2020, but since then the defender has failed to keep up with the duties and has also struggled with his bad form and thereby losing his place as well this season.

The new manager Erik Ten Hag gave him the headstart in the first two games of the Premier League which ended in back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Brentford and after that hasn’t found himself in the starting eleven in the league. With the impressive duo of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane settling in quite well, fans feel that Maguire’s time at the club is up.

Harry Maguire has been sidelined due to a thigh injury but has returned to training to get his form back and secure the first-team place in Gareth Southgate’s starting eleven in the World Cup set to be held later this year. And in the last game against Chelsea, Raphael Varane picked up a hamstring injury which could in return revive Maguire’s hopes of getting a place in the starting XI.

Is Bruno the perfect replacement for the leadership responsibilities of the club according to Dwight Yorke?

Dwight Yorke spoke to Lord Ping about the change saying that Bruno Fernandes has got all the backing from the new manager and the “confidence he needed as a player. Before he was the stand-in captain, which wasn’t a problem. I think with the Maguire scenario, looking from the outside in at the club without knowing all the details, I think he’s been told he’s going to be the captain going forward.”

He added, “When a manager tells you something like that, then that weight comes off. So now he’s thinking, ‘Right, this is my new role.’ That clarity is good for the team and enables him to go out and do what he needs to do. Obviously, I wouldn’t expect this to be an official announcement this season with Maguire at the club, but perhaps the manager has had a word with him and that has given him the signal.”
