Heung-Min Son scored a superb goal to give Tottenham Hotspur the lead against Brighton and Hove Albion. The teams are fifth and sixth, respectively, and are hoping to finish in the top 4 this season.

Son received the ball from Ivan Perisic on the left and drove inside to the centre of the visitors’ defence. He unleashed a curled effort around Joel Veltman and past goalkeeper Jason Steele into the top corner. Son Heung-Min became the first Asian player in history to score 100 goals.

The South Korean has had a poor season, providing just ten goal contributions in 27 Premier League games. It is a far cry from last season when he finished with 23 goals and nine assists in the competition. Son recently told journalists that he blamed himself for manager Antonio Conte’s departure. “I should have played better. I feel responsible for his departure because I haven’t helped the club all that much,” he said.

Tottenham fired Conte after a difficult season and an increasingly toxic atmosphere around the club. The Italian had a difficult time personally, too, following the deaths of two close friends. He also recently underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder.

Tim Sherwood believes it is “unusual” for a footballer to take responsibility after Antonio Conte was fired from Tottenham Hotspur. The Italian left Tottenham with a bang after a particularly explosive press conference criticizing the club and his players. None of the Spurs squad, apart from Son, have spoken about Conte since his departure.

Sherwood praised Son for his comments and honesty. “It’s hard to criticise this kid because he’s such a good lad,” said Sherwood. “Son’s a fantastic trainer and a good person to have around the place. He’s very honest and wants to take a bit of responsibility, which is unusual for a footballer to do. We have been there and don’t want to take any when we play. Sometimes you have to.”

He acknowledged Son’s poor season but also gave him credit. “He hasn’t had a good season. It hasn’t been to his normal standards, and he wants to shoulder some responsibility. I think he is the only one who said that. Conte did dig a few of them out and is the only one who has replied. You have to give him credit for that.”
