The most wonderful La Liga goal of the current campaign may have been scored by Federico Valverde.

On a lovely early day at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium as it undergoes renovations, Real Madrid was looking to build on their excellent start to the 2022–23 season. The defending champions entered their most recent league match with an undefeated record of three victories and one tie, and they needed to pick up another three points to tie Barcelona for first place.

Federico Valverde stated “I don’t know how much I ran for the goal. I just saw the red shirts and kept on going, and when there was a little bit of space in front me I made the most of it.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s team’s performance in front of their home supporters did not go as planned as they fell behind Mallorca 1-0 on a goal from Vedat Muriqi after 35 minutes. However, just as Real Madrid continued to fight into first-half stoppage time and the halftime whistle was drawing near, Valverde actually pulled the rabbit out of the hat to equalise for the hosts.

The Uruguay international is renowned as a bit of a locomotive in the middle of the field, but that was never more evident than on Sunday when he scored an incredible solo goal. Valverde decided he didn’t need any assistance as he blasted his way past several Mallorca defenders and quickly moved toward their penalty area after picking up the ball in the middle of his own half.

The excitement, though, didn’t stop there. Valverde duly unleashed a thunderbolt-like strike that found a spot in the upper left corner for the following stunning moment. Although Valverde has always excelled in the box-to-box midfield position, it is quite another to witness him practically carry the ball from one penalty area to the other by himself.

And in many respects, Los Blancos under Ancelotti’s management were exemplified by Valverde’s brilliant strike to bring Real to even terms. At the end of the day, we can’t deny that Real do rely excessively on individual flashes of brilliance, but that’s not always a terrible thing as it can sometimes be for other sides.
