Joao Cancelo made a shocking move to Bayern Munich on the deadline day of the January Transfer window. He signed a loan move with the German Giants, with the club having the option to buy him at the end of the season for €61 million. His former Manchester City teammate Bernardo Silva voiced his thoughts on the sudden transfer, saying that it was ‘sad’ for him and his squad.

The right-back played 98 games for the defending champions since joining the side and has lodged 12 assists, seven of which came last season. The Portuguese also replaced Kyle Walker, having a similar pace but showed better defensive qualities.

Joao Cancelo joined Manchester City back in 2019, after a successful stint with Italian giants Juventus. The 28-year-old Portuguese was a crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s squad. He went on to win the league twice with City and was included in the PFA Team of the Year. However, since the World Cup, Joao Cancelo seemed to be lacking in form, due to which he was not getting enough game time with City. Cancelo had reportedly fallen out with City coach Pep Guardiola since his return from Qatar.

Bernardo Silva revealed on Sunday after City’s 1-0 defeat that he was happy for his fellow countryman. “Happy for him, because it was the path he chose to continue happily in his life,” Silva said in an interview with Eleven Sports. “Sad for the team and for me, because I won’t be able to count on him every day. He knows that he is a person that I like a lot. But he made the best decision for him and I’m really happy for him.” He added.

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola spoke about Joao Cancelo’s loan move to Bayern Munich, stating Cancelo’s future is uncertain. Guardiola broke the silence about Joao Cancelo before their premier league clash against Tottenham Hotspurs on Sunday. He started off by wishing the Portuguese ‘the best’. “First I wish him the very best in his 4 months.”

“Next season I don’t know what happens. An incredible figure in the last 2 leagues we won. After the World Cup, we make a pre-season and decided to play, in some patterns different. I like what I watch. I give more time to other players. His personality, mine, he loves to play. He trains the best, the situation he doesn’t play much.” Pep Guardiola stated. “In the last years one of the players with more minutes. He needs to play to be happy, we decide to let him go to Munich.” He added.

“If Bayern Munich want Joao it’s because he’s an exceptional player. I won’t say a bad word, his work ethic, passion, skills. Always I’m pleased with the squad. Being not sure, it’s better to have the money in the bank and don’t be criticized to spend more.” Joao Cancelo has made two appearances for Bayern Munich since his move, providing a wonderful assist on his debut.
