“If it was Ronaldo, he would have been called an Arrogant brat” – Twitter reacts as Lionel Messi refuses to shake hands with Robert Lewandowski at 2022 FIFA World Cup

After Argentina defeated Poland 2-0 in the World Cup, Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi encountered an awkward situation on the field. Finally, both players were allowed to rejoice as Argentina’s triumph ensured that they advanced as group winners while Poland narrowly advanced as runners-up, edging Mexico to second place.

However, there appeared to be a tense exchange between Barcelona’s past and present greats. When Lewandowski fouled Messi, who was very much in his focused, in-game mood utterly rejected the Polish striker’s attempt at a handshake.

Lewandowski made two efforts to foul Messi, with the second drawing the referee’s whistle as the European team fought desperately because they were two goals behind and believed that another goal would eliminate them from the tournament.

Messi immediately took the free kick, and Lewandowski again attempted to shake hands with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner before saying something that appeared to be an apology for the infringement. Messi, however, seemed unimpressed. Nevertheless, the two captains were seen exchanging a quick nod on the pitch after both teams celebrated their respective progress to the round of 16.
