Southgate consoles Saka after his penalty miss in the UEFA Euro 2020 final

He has never been affected by the abuse on social media following his miss in the penalty shoot-out in last summer’s Euros final. England boss Gareth Southgate said the way he reacted and put last summer behind him was outstanding but he says he always believed he would handle it because he is such a popular and grounded member of the squad.

After the Euros last summer, there were doubts over if Bukayo Saka would be able to have the kind of impact he has had. There were serious concerns over his confidence and how he would react to everything that happened, but it has to be said, the Englishman has been fantastic for both club and country.

Southgate was quizzed about Saka’s season and the Three Lions boss admitted that the Arsenal man is probably ‘less appreciated’ compared to England’s other big stars, but he’s a fabulous player.

He said,” I don’t know if it’s a surprise, because of how he is. He’s got brilliant support and a great family. His value have been brilliant with him and here, he’s felt the love of the players and staff immediately.

“That will have helped, in the immediate aftermath for him. He’s a fantastic talent. He’s one that’s possibly less appreciated because his profile isn’t quite the same as some of our other attacking players.

“He just quietly goes about his job, but I think you see the consistency of his performances and quality of his play. He scores goals, he makes goals and defends for the team. He’s a fabulous kid. If your daughter brings Bukayo home you’d be more than happy.”

Bukayo Saka really is a fantastic talent. He has just had a brilliant season at Arsenal and despite only being 20 years of age, he has become a regular in the international setup as well.

The youngster scored 12 goals and provided seven assists for the Gunners last season. He was arguably their best player and deservedly won the Player Of The Season award ahead of the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Aaron Ramsdale and even Martin Odegaard.
