On this day, 4 years ago Barcelona had one of the best performances of their history beating Real Madrid 5-1. Real Madrid had lost both their star player Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus and their coach Zinedine Zidane after yet another successful season. Julen Lopetegui was appointed the new Real Madrid coach, and there was a lot of hope in him.
Lionel Messi was not playing the El Classico match for the first time since 2007 due to an injury but the Catalan club didn’t miss their star man as Luis Suarez guided them to a scintillating victory over their rivals. Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick with Phillipe Coutinho and Arturo Vidal getting one goal each as well while Marcelo pulled one back for Real Madrid.
The loss had put more pressure on the new manager Julen Lopetegui and fans were questioning the tactics and decisions of the board and President as well. Philippe Coutinho put Barcelona ahead in the 11th minute and right after that Suarez doubled Barca’s lead scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled by Raphael Varane.
Marcelo gave Real Madrid a glim of hope after pulling one back just after half time but Suarez’s header in the 75th minute gave Barcelona the assurance goal. And with just 10 mins to play for, Barcelona players were adamant about increasing their lead as Suarez completed his hattrick in the 83rd minute, and substitute Arturo Vidal put the icing on the cake by scoring a goal coming on as a substitute.
The result put a lot of pressure as Real Madrid dropped to the ninth place in the league table losing three straight league matches, while Barcelona had their biggest El Clasico win since 2010. This was Real’s worst start in LaLiga in 19 years and also was an alarming sign for Lopetegui to start finding solutions before time runs out.
