“F*ck Racism,” Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku responds after getting racially abused by Juventus fans

Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku was subjected to racial abuse before being sent off for celebrating after scoring against Juventus in the Copa Italia semifinal. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw. He has struck back through his social media to hit back at the abusers.

Speaking about the decision by the referee to send him off, Lukaku stated, “This beautiful game should be enjoyed by everyone. F**k racism.” This is not at all a rare incident in the footballing universe. Real Madrid star man Vinicius Junior has been a regular victim and historically, racism in football has been a regular fixture.

Micheal Yormark, the president of Roc Nations Sports International, one of Lukaku’s sponsors, stated the following in response to the racial abuse: “Tonight’s racist remarks made towards Romelu Lukaku by Juventus fans in Turin were beyond despicable and cannot be accepted. The Italian authorities must use this opportunity to tackle racism, rather than punish the victim of the abuse.”

The tie between the Italian sides was pure chaos as three players were sent off. After Juan Cuadrado opened the scoring for Juventus in the 83rd minute, Inter Milan were awarded a penalty in the stoppage time. Romelu Lukaku, who was racially abused throughout the match, stepped up to take the penalty which he converted. However, his celebration prompted the referee to send him off.

The tie also saw Inter Milan goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and goal scorer Juan Cuadrado being sent off deep into extra time before the frenzied game’s final whistle was blown. The second and deciding leg will be played at the San Siro Stadium on April 27.
