Ramin Rezaeian and Rouzbeh Cheshmi both scored in extra time to give Iran a famous 2-0 World Cup victory over Wales and keep their hopes of advancing to the round of 16 alive. Wales, who had Wayne Hennessey sent off late in the game, appeared to be on track to avoid defeat, but two excellent goals from Iran right at the finish caused chaos among their players and supporters.
After choosing not to sing the national song against England, Iran decided to do so before the match. This escalated the tension and led to an early outburst that included a goal that was later ruled to have been offside by Ali Gholizadeh. It appeared that luck was on Wales’ side based on that let-off and the fact that Gholizadeh and Sardar Azmoun both hit the post shortly after the break.
Iran dispatched the Dragons in a merciless and extraordinary manner after Hennessey was sent off for a reckless challenge. Twitter in total meltdown on the prospect of having Iran and the USA competing for the second spot in the final group game which now looks like a mouthwatering occasion, to say the least.
