Iran people took it to the street to celebrate their team’s disappointing loss to USA at the 2022 FIFA World Cup
America vs Iran
The Iran national football team’s loss to the United States in the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday resulted in strange celebrations in their home nation, which stand in stark contrast to the response anticipated following any national football team loss. The nation has abandoned the football team that they view as an extension of the tyrannical regime.
Images of celebration on Iranian streets have been extensively circulated on social media. Iranians can be seen in videos posted on Twitter dancing on the streets in a rare expression of happiness. However, the dancing and joyous honking were also a demonstration of disapproval as they opposed the football team’s World Cup participation during such a turbulent period.
Since September, more than 300 people, including children, have died in protests against Mahsa Amini’s killing. On September 16, Mahsa Amini was murdered in detention by Iran’s notorious morality police for the “crime” of not donning her headscarf properly.
United States defeats Iran 1-0 to advance to the knockout round of FIFA World Cup 2022
Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, the United States defeated Iran 1-0 to advance to the World Cup’s round of 16. The Americans needed to win in order to advance from Group B, and they did it after enduring some tremendously tense moments in stoppage time of the second half, in addition to injuries to Josh Sargent and goal scorer Christian Pulisic. The United States team, who came in second place in the group to England, will play the Group A champion Netherlands on Saturday at 10 a.m. Eastern.
Christian Pulisic, a standout player for the United States, scored the game’s lone goal in the 38th minute but was forced from the game after the break due to an abdominal injury. From there, the Americans held off an impromptu Iranian charge that only need a draw to succeed.
There were nine agonizing minutes of stoppage time, during which a ball was cleared off the U.S. goal line and a potential penalty after an Iran player was brought down in the box was reviewed. The Netherlands, who won Group A, will face the United States on Saturday in the round of 16.
