“It’s the biggest club in the world”- Paul Merson believes managing Manchester United is the most difficult job that Eric ten Hag has ever taken

Eric ten Hag oversaw Manchester United’s first-ever training session yesterday with a few players as many are still on a break after their international duty. A lack of transfer activity means that Eric ten Hag must work with what he’s got for now.

Manchester United endured one of their worst seasons in the Premier League last term. From being title contenders with a world-class squad, the club have dropped to the Europa League with many players rejecting the club as well. Skysports‘ Paul Merson believes that this will be Eric ten Hag’s most difficult job in his career at Manchester United.

Paul Merson on Manchester United’s signings on Eric ten Hag’s job at hand

Speaking about the situation at Manchester United, Paul Merson said, “If Ten Hag managed for the rest of his life, it’ll never be harder than what he’s taking on now.” 

“This is a massive job. It’s the biggest club in the world and he is taking over when they’re in disarray. He needs to bring in as many players as he can because this team is not going to get you in the top four.”

“They need to bring certain players in – (Frenkie) De Jong at Barcelona, he’s a good footballer – and then you move on from there. They need at least three or four players just to make a challenge for fourth place.”

Other clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham have already roped in new players to strengthen their squad while Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez for €80 million. Manchester United are yet to make any signings as talks with Barcelona still heading nowhere.

Reports suggest that Manchester United’s ace, Cristiano Ronaldo is also left frustrated with the club’s lack of transfer activity and will consider his future at the club as well if the situation doesn’t change. Eric ten Hag surely will have a mountain of work at his hands, as he begins his tenure at the helm at Manchester United.
