19-year-old Jaedyn Shaw has become the new crowd favorite. A 79th minute winner against China PR had the crowd on his feet, more specifically, fans in her ‘hometown’. The final game of the USWNT in 2023 was heading to a 1-1 draw when the home side were awarded a free kick at the edge of the box. Even though Jaedyn Shaw was in contention to take the free kick, teammate Jenna Nighswonger ended up taking it.

The shot hit the wall, and after a bit of pinball in the area, the ball fell invitingly to Shaw. She wasted no time hitting the loose ball the first time, blasting it into the back of the net. The crowd erupted in cheers as Shaw and her teammates celebrated in emphatic fashion with the crowd. Her sublime volley proved to be the winner against China and helped the USWNT end their 2023 on a high note.

The USWNT suffered a disappointing year as they crashed out of the 2023 FIFA World Cup in the Round of 16. Star player Megan Rapinoe also announced her retirement from the team as head coach Vlatko Andonovski announced his resignation from the team after their World Cup failure. Interim head coach Twila Kilgore has now led the team to a 6th consecutive win after taking charge in August.

The second half saw a comeback by the home side, as Samantha Coffey curled her shot into the top bin from behind a crowd of players. Subsequently, Jaedyn Shaw followed up with the winner in the 79th minute, as she blasted her shot past Xu Huan. The “Frisco kid’s” first goal for the USWNT meant that they ended 2023 on the end of 6 games unbeaten.
