Jamie Carragher bashes FIFA for its decision to hold the World Cup at such a ‘disgusting’ time: Reports

FIFA World Cup 2022 Trophy.

Former Liverpool player and Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher has bashed and accused FIFA of putting players in a very unpleasant and “disgusting” position by deciding to hold the FIFA World Cup in the middle of the club season. The tournament will be taking place while the domestic leagues of all the players are put on halt after it was decided that the tournament will be held in November due to Qatar’s hot climate during summer.

Jamie Carragher says that in the Qatar World Cup players are being treated like ‘cattle’. Players are currently playing important club games just before the World Cup which can even force them to suffer a serious injury and that can shatter their hopes of being involved in the elite competition and representing their country.

Carragher also brought in the example of Raphael Varane who was in tears after coming off in the match between Manchester United and Chelsea last month, which put his World Cup chances in doubt. Another player was the South Korean star man Hueng Min-Son who suffered a fractured eye in the Champions League.

What did Jamie Carragher say about this year’s November World Cup?

Carragher bashed FIFA saying, “To them, elite footballers are like cattle. They get well paid and should get on with it, regardless of the psychological and physical consequences. It is disgusting that players are being put in such a position, and they are at their most vulnerable right now as they are expected to go full throttle in the final weeks before joining their national team.”

He added, “In normal circumstances, the squads would already be at the pre-tournament training camp, the fine-tuning underway before the opening ceremony. The decisions at the top have materially enhanced the risk of injuries. That was inevitable when the World Cup was arranged in mid-season. Everyone with even the slightest understanding of the demands upon a top-level footballer knew that.”
