Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have expressed worries about their job as pundits at Sky Sports. Gary Neville joined the network in 2011 after retiring from football. He was quick to garner popularity, because of his speaking skills and football analysis. He left the position in 2015 to manage Valencia but returned in 2016 after getting sacked. Jamie Carragher, on the other hand, joined the network in 2013.

The duo’s chemistry was heavily praised and they both got a show of their own in Monday Night Football. Since then, they have been a huge part of Sky Sports, becoming mainstays in it. Sky Sports have even provided Gary Neville with his own YouTube channel ‘The Overlap’. Meanwhile, Carragher is known to make frequent appearances there along with Manchester United legend Roy Keane. Though they have had moments of tension due to the rivalry between United and Liverpool, they have always managed to set their differences aside and provide content for the network.

Neville said, “I don’t really think about how long it’s been. But it is hard, you know. It’s not playing football, it’s not being a manager, but anyone who looks at it and thinks, ‘Oh, they’re just on television, talking about football’… well, yeah, OK.” He said about the difficulties of being a successful presenter.

However, Sky Sports were struggling after the pandemic and suffered a huge loss in their budget. Many people working there lost their jobs. Most of the senior commentators also left the network. They said, “We know it will be taken away from us the minute it doesn’t work anymore, so we’re very conscious of making sure we change things all of the time.” For now, both of them are still employed by Sky and will be there for the upcoming season.

Football punditry has also become more competitive due to the emergence of digital media. Many people have started doing it on YouTube and Twitter, earning significant income through it. So, if the content they are producing is not good, nobody will want to listen to what they have to say.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both know this, for a fact. “There are thousands of jobs all over the world now doing this, so to stay at Sky, the Premier League rights-holders in this country, and on shows like Super Sunday and Monday Night Football, the demands are high,” said Neville.

Jamie Carragher joined CBS Sports’ Champions League studio broadcast team in 2020. Wherein he is seen discussing the UCL games and fixtures alongside Thierry Henry and Micah Richards. Gary Neville however exclusively works for Sky.
