Jamie Carragher has claimed that Pep Guardiola might be holding Phil Foden’s potential back. The player who is still considered one of the biggest talents in the country is still not a guaranteed starter on the team. After David Silva’s departure from the club, it was expected that he would succeed him and take over from him.
But that did not come to fruition, with Ilkay Gundogan mainly occupying that spot. Now that Gundogan has left for Barcelona, Foden is still not touted for that position, as City have just signed Mateo Kovacic and are looking to sign Lucas Paqueta from West Ham. Carragher said, “Phil Foden is not young anymore. Three or four years ago, we were saying he was going to be the best English player.”
He added, “It almost feels like Jude Bellingham has become that player, where he’s the one we build this England team around. Foden can’t quite get in the England team and can’t get in the Manchester City team.” Carragher also said that despite Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez’s departures, they still haven’t brought Foden into the line-up.
Phil Foden has been part of the City squad since 2018. He has been part of all the title-winning teams under Pep Guardiola. He has shown flashes of brilliance in his ability and has been compared to many greats because of it. However, his inability to start games regularly might be hugely detrimental to his career. He must now contemplate his future and whether it lies in City.

Phil Foden’s future looks obscure
When Sergio Aguero left the club, he wanted his No. 10 shirt to be worn by Phil Foden. But it was instead given to then-new signing Jack Grealish. Players like Julian Alvarez, who are younger than him and came to the club much later, have made more impact in the starting lineup than him.
He now needs to think about what lies ahead for him and whether his future is with his boyhood club. He has been a poster boy for their youth academy, which is known more for selling its graduates.
Even though he could still be recognized as a skilled young individual, this might not remain the case for an extended period. Teams like Liverpool and Arsenal could benefit from having him in the team. He might get many more opportunities there and thrive.
