Japan
After their stunning World Cup victory against Germany, Japan left their locker room spotless with a message in Arabic. Japan came from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 on Wednesday, thanks to goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano in the second half.
Japan started their trip to Qatar off with a victory, giving them a strong chance to advance to the tournament’s next stage. After their team’s victory, there were euphoric scenes in Tokyo, as their supporters cleaned up after themselves inside the Khalifa International Stadium.
While cleaning their locker area and leaving a heartwarming message, the Japan squad showed restraint despite their massive triumph. They placed several origami on the table and left a note that said “thank you” in Arabic. Hajime Moriyasu, the manager of Japan, praised his team’s effort and called the victory “an historic moment.”

Kakuro Mitoma started the move with a pass that expertly cut through Germany’s left channel before finding Takumi Minamino. The AS Monaco player launched a shot that resembled a cross more than anything else, but Manuel Neuer was quick enough to deflect it. Ritsu Doan, who slid the ball past the goalkeeper from six yards out, was the only one his save could stop. Germany, who had been leading 1-0 at the time, was startled by a fantastic move in the 75th minute.
Takehiro Tomiyasu was the first player to enter the game in the 46th minute. Takuma Asano and Mitoma came on after 11 minutes. When Asano came within inches of burying a cross from Junya Ito’s right-wing, those adjustments almost paid off. Japan, who had a 4-2-3-1 starting lineup, switched to a more attacking 3-4-3 formation to maximize Mitoma’s threats in 1v1 situations and better use his speed on the wings.
Moriyasu added Doan in the 71st minute as Japan began to nudge their way back into the game, with Minamino coming in three minutes later. Japan quickly turned the tide by scoring the equalizer in the 75th minute after all substitutes had been used, and his system change had taken shape by the 74th minute. After Minamino had been on the field for less than a minute, all three players involved in the first goal were introduced off the bench in the second half.
In the 83rd minute, Bundesliga player Asano struck third time lucky. On the right side, he skillfully controlled a long, floating ball, outmuscled Nico Schlotterbeck, who attempted to push him away from goal, and then fired a strong right-footed shot that beat Neuer at the near post. The remainder of the team ran onto the field to join the goal scorer in celebrating, sending the Japanese fans into a frenzy.
