The Spain Women’s National Team came out glorious in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final between Spain and England held on 20th August. During the final ceremonies, images and clips have resurfaced of Spanish FA chief, Luis Rubiales lifting the World Cup star, Athenea Del Castillo on his shoulders.
Rubiales has already been on the verge of resigning from his position after the controversial lip lock incident with Jenni Hermoso during the medalling ceremony. Three days later, the 46-year-old Rubiales has to face major backlash from social media fans and Spanish FA officials.
Regarding the controversial incident, the Royal Spanish Football Federation has taken serious steps and has already filed a complaint. Spain’s captain, Olga Carmona’s 29th-minute goal made Spain win their first-ever FIFA World Cup, beating England by 1-0 in the final. Rubiales had earlier tried to justify his wrong actions as friendly behavior but later apologized for the same. However, Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez said the apology would not be enough.
