Barcelona star, Joao Felix, in an interview with ESPN, expressed his admiration for FC Barcelona‘s playing style over that of his former club, Atletico Madrid. He admitted that the Catalans play a more attacking brand of football. These comments were made ahead of Barcelona’s next match against Atletico.
The young Portuguese forward, who plays for FC Barcelona on loan from Atletico Madrid, has made a good start to the 2023-24 season. He has featured 16 times for Barca, scoring 4 goals and assisting 3 times. Felix signed for Atletico for a record fee of £108 million but failed to reciprocate the price tag. He went on to join Chelsea for a season but failed to leave any mark.
Now, since joining Barcelona he has flourished primarily as a left winger, but also as a center-forward occasionally.
Speaking with ESPN, Felix highlighted the contrast in playing styles. According to him, Barcelona opts for an attacking approach, consistently staying in the opponent’s half. In contrast, Atletico Madrid and the Portuguese national team adopt a less aggressive style. He mentioned that Atletico aims to adopt Barcelona’s style.
For sure [I prefer] this style [at Barcelona] -- me and every player. If you ask every player, if you ask the players from Atlético, too, they would prefer to play more time on the attack, for sure. If they don't answer that, they are lying. Of course every player wants to attack, wants to have the ball and to score goals.
Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann recently hit out at Felix. The Frenchman said he was ‘inconsistent’ during his tenure in the Spanish capital, while Felix replied to the French by exclaiming that many people were responsible for his poor form at Atletico.
Joao Felix hits back at criticism from Atletico stars- Griezmann, Oblak and Niguez
Atletico Madrid will travel to Barcelona on Sunday, in what is set to be a mouth-watering La Liga clash between the two sides. Before the match, Felix defended himself from several accusations by Atletico Madrid stars.
Antoine Griezmann, Saul Niguez, and Jan Oblak expressed their views on Joao Felix’s struggles at Atletico Madrid. Griezmann and Oblak criticized Felix for inconsistency and lackluster efforts. The French forward said:
There were moments when he did very well, but you have to be consistent and he got tired anyway. So he and the club made the effort to give him a way out.
In response, Felix disagreed, stating that multiple factors contributed to his challenges at Atletico. He said:
Well, that's his opinion and I won't comment.
Now, under Barcelona’s manager Xavi, Felix has found stability and seems to be settling well. Finally, he will look to settle these criticisms on the field when he takes on his former teammates.
