Ex-Roma manager Jose Mourinho was left in tears after his managerial contract was terminated by the Italian side following a disappointing 2023-24 campaign. The Portuguese coach was seen departing the club’s training center after the decision.
The former Inter Milan manager, who is often regarded as one of the greatest and most decorated football managers of all time, was sacked by Serie A side, AS Roma. He signed for Roma in May 2021, replacing Paulo Fonseca, after two distasteful seasons at Tottenham Hotspur. The three-time UCL winner has guided some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Under his guidance, Roma secured a triumphant victory in the Conference League in 2022 and achieved two consecutive sixth-place finishes in the Serie A standings..
AS Roma are grappling this season, winning just eight of their first 20 matches and sitting in the ninth position on the Italian league table, trailing leaders Inter Milan by 22 points. The ex-Chelsea manager faced termination after unsatisfactory results, including consecutive losses to Lazio and AC Milan. Following the premature termination of his contract, Mourinho left the Roma training facility visibly emotional. The 60-year-old fought back tears as he departed, with fans singing his name.
Moreover, the club authorities were reportedly left frustrated over the manager’s disciplinary issues, as he was sent off twice in three days. Shortly after Mourinho’s departure, Roma appointed club legend Daniele De Rossi as the manager until the end of the season.
