Jose Mourinho wouldn’t be called the ‘Special One’ without reason. The former Champions League and Premier League winner is very well known for his exploits on the pitch as much as he is for his antics on the touchline. Fans are in disbelief at a surprising statistic as Jose Mourinho finishes two years in charge of Serie A club AS Roma. Despite not being an outfield player, Jose Mourinho has been sent off a record 5 times.
Adding the spice to the record, no Serie A player has picked up more cards during the same time! The Portuguese seemed to have rolled back his years in the Premier League as two uncontrolled outbursts against Atalanta on Monday earned him his most recent sending-off. Even though his side were restricted to a draw against Atalanta, Mourinho’s sending-off remains the highlight/
His first yellow card came after the manager sprinted out of his dugout to refute a call made by the referee. Mourinho proceeded to remember his passion and drive even at the age of 60 when a second yellow card was brandished in his direction by referee Gianluca Aureliano.
The particular statistic is making rounds on social media and netizens are in stitches and expressing their love for Jose Mourinho. Here are some of the fans’ reactions:
In the moments that followed, he shook his head in disapproval as he walked the length of the touchline. He will now serve yet another touchline ban at Roma. But that did not change the love of football fans towards him. The Roma fans serenaded the stadium with the chants of ‘Jose Mourinho’ as he walked off.
Jose Mourinho sees red as AS Roma held at home against Atalanta
AS Roma and Jose Mourinho were on the back of a 2-1 win against Cremonese in the Coppa Italia on Friday. Mourinho and his men were in for a challenge against Atalanta, who were 7th in the table before the tie. Teun Koopmeiners put the visitors to a brilliant start in the capital city. The forward leaped well over his marker to head home a cross from Aleksei Miranchuk in the seventh minute of the game.
Roma played themselves into more trouble as Charles De Ketelaere was put through on goal. However, a sublime save by Rui Patricio ensued and Roma had a fighting chance in the game. The home side were given a chance to get back into the game when the referee pointed to the spot in the 36th minute. Amidst rumors of a potential move to the Premier League, Paulo Dybala stepped up to place the ball past Marco Carnesecchi.
While either side came close to a winner, it was the home side who enjoyed the majority of chances. Romelu Lukaku was through on goal when he was muscled down to the turf in the dying minutes. Jose Mourinho’s animated reactions earned him his second yellow of the night as the game ended on level terms. After the draw, Roma sit at 8th while Atalanta are one point above, in seventh.
