Klopp has delivered both the Champions League and Premier League but his current form might worry the fans

Jurgen Klopp leaves behind legendary Liverpool managers after accomplishing this special record in Premier League clash against Everton

Jurgen Klopp becomes the fastest Liverpool manager to win 250 games after the Derby win on Monday. Klopp’s Liverpool saw off relegation-threatened Everton 2-0 come-up trumps in the much-coveted Merseyside Derby.

The win also marked the 250th win for the German and in record time. Klopp took 414 to reach the historic milestone, much before some of his illustrious predecessors at the helm of the club. He beat the likes of Bob Paisley (448), Bill Shankly (472) and Tom Watson (539), three of the biggest names in Liverpool history.

In his seven seasons since joining the club in 2015, Klopp has seen insurmountable success. He won the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. The gritty mastermind has also led his club to the UCL finals in 2018 and 2022.

Paisley, who also was the assistant of Bill Shankly, was associated with the Merseyside club for more than 5 decades. He joined the club in 1940 as a player and left the club in 1992 due to Ill health.

Both Paisley and Shankly were able to make Liverpool the dominant force in Europe. Paisley won 6 League Championships and 3 European Cups. Shankly also managed 3 top flight titles and one European Cup. While Klopp’s achievements fall short in comparison, the fact that he has managed to win fewer trophies despite winning so many matches also stands testament to the growing difficulty of modern-day football.

Klopp with Liverpool

Liverpool was seen playing a lighting-quick brand of football in the derby, characteristic of their 19/20 or 21/22 seasons. This season, the club has not been on song for most of the games. Klopp’s side went into the match with a dismal record of no wins in 2023 and a 3-0 mauling at the Molineux against relegation-battling Wolves.

Before the match, Klopp said, “I am 100% committed. If we win I feel like I was part of it but if we lose I feel 100% responsible. I was always like this in my life, so you can imagine how big the responsibility at the moment is and how I feel now and we will do absolutely everything to get through this and prepare the very positive future again.” Liverpool is currently 9th in the league having conceded 28 already, two more than their entire previous campaign.

Liverpool has also found it difficult to get into the groove this season. Big-money signings, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo have not filled in the Mane-Firmino void, leaving Salah too much to do. Gakpo’s goal contribution metrics have gone down from 1.68 per 90 in PSV Eindhoven to just 0.27 since joining Liverpool. The Uruguayan, Nunez, has also seen his goal contribution nosedive from 1.36 per 90 to 0.68 since his move to the Premier League.

The striking woes coupled with long-term injuries to club captain Virgil Van Dijk have landed Liverpool in the current predicament. Would Klopp manage to turn his form around after the derby win will remain the bigger question for the fans.
