Italian giants Juventus won’t compete in Europe in the upcoming season. This is reportedly due to the problems they had been facing with the financial fair play rules.
Reports from Italian news outlet Corriere dello Sport suggest that Juventus reached an agreement with UEFA. Reports suggest that the club would see themselves move out of European competitions this term completely for the season. The club in this way is reportedly trying to avoid any further punishment over breaching financial fair play regulations and to avoid any new sanctions that might hamper their plans to play the Champions League football in the 2024/25 season.
Ten points were deducted from Juventus in May after evidence of false accounting was found following the investigation into the club’s transfer portfolio of the past few years. This was after Juventus had 15 points deducted earlier this year, but managed to repeal the sentence.
Apart from the points deduction, many of Juventus‘ former board members were banned from football activities. This included the club’s ex-president Andrea Agnelli, who stepped down along with some of his counsels. The Old Lady was second in the Serie A standings when they were punished. This resulted in them going down to seventh place and were out of the Champions League spots. Although their position by the end of the league saw them qualify for the Europa Conference League this season, they might not compete to comply with their agreement.
Juventus’ new leaders believe that the new agreement that they agreed with UEFA is a small price to pay. The club is looking to begin a new chapter in its history, again, after suffering through the age of Calciopoli.
