Kepa Arrizabalaga gave a simple response for picking Real Madrid over Bayern Munich. “When Real Madrid calls you, it’s easy,” said the goalkeeper.

In an interview with Marca, Kepa reveals how close he was to signing for The Bavarians. The player was second choice to Eduoard Mendy during Thomas Tuchel‘s reign at Chelsea. However, when Tuchel had called Kepa to join Munich, he stated, “When a coach that didn’t play you much says he wants you in his team, that gives you a good feeling.” The keeper revealed he was very close to joining Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich. However, an injury to Thibaut Courtois meant that a transfer to Real Madrid was a possibility for the player.

In Kepa’s words, “Real Madrid is Real Madrid.” He chose Real Madrid over Bayern Munich. Munich were upset at losing their transfer target as they lost Yann Sommer to Inter Milan this summer. Kepa has since then made two appearances for the club. With only one goal conceded, the Spanish goalkeeper will be hoping to win over the Madrid crowd with his performances. The goalkeeper also reunites with former teammate Antonio Rudiger who joined from Chelsea last season.

Kepa revealed that when Real Madrid comes calling, who can ignore them? The Royal Whites, Los Blancos, or the European Royalties. They have had a plethora of legends in their squads throughout the years. Some of the newer generations will have seen Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric dawn the white jersey, and older generations will remember Ronaldo Nazario and Zinedine Zidane fondly. Throughout history, some of the best players to ever play the game, at one point, called Santiago Bernabéu their home.

So who has rejected the mighty Real Madrid? Gianluigi Buffon rejected Los Blancos. Following the Calciopoli scandal many top teams were looking to sign the goalkeeper. Buffon, however, decided to stick with his side as he played in the 2nd division of Italian football. Luis Suarez picked Barcelona over Real Madrid stating it was his dream to play for the Blaugrana.

Steven Gerrard another one of the midfielders loyal to Liverpool Football Club, did not budge when Real Madrid came knocking. Francesco Totti rejected both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Totti stated that he was tempted to join but remained in Italy with Roma, the club where he debuted and retired.

In the words of German Legend Franz Beckenbauer, “Real Madrid is a legendary team that stands above all the others and is the target of all the players.”
