Keylor Navas joined Real Madrid in 2014, initially playing as Iker Casillas’s backup. He managed to get 11 appearances that season but made his mark in the very next season. He finally became Madrid’s number 1 keeper and won many trophies for the club. Navas was crucial for Madrid’s Champions League Threepeat.
Five years after he signed for Madrid, he was sold to PSG. He lost his spot to Thibaut Courtois in 2018 and barely played for Los Blancos. In 2019 he moved to France to play for PSG, but fell out of favor for Gianluigi Donnarumma in 2021. In the next season, he played only 2 games in the entire season.

Looking for games, Navas moved to the Premier League to play for Nottingham Forest on loan, where he played 17 games. He is now PSG’s third-choice keeper, behind Donnarumma and Arnaus Tenas. Searching for moves away from the French giants, reports reveal that the 37-year-old had contacted Real Madrid in the summer.
Thibaut Courtois, Navas’s replacement, had torn his ACL in training, just two days before La Liga began. Seeing that his old club required a keeper, he contacted them, offering his services. Unfortunately, the club refused, instead opting to loan Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea.
What is the keeper situation at Real Madrid?
Thibaut Courtois tore his ACL during training in August. Although the team had Andriy Lunin available, they decided to loan Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea. Lunin filled in for Courtois until Kepa started regularly.

He made his Real Madrid debut on 8th August 2023, in a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo. He played the next 12 games, keeping 6 clean sheets across La Liga and the Champions League. Unfortunately, he injured himself during the start of November, with a ruptured abductor muscle in his right leg. This occurred when he was warming up for Madrid’s Champions League fixture with SC Braga.
Lunin got his first European start of the season and kept a clean sheet. He continued to play 5 La Liga matches and UEFA Champions League games. He kept three clean sheets, conceding 7 goals. He was dropped for Madrid’s last Champions League match when Kepa finally returned. Lunin did start the next La Liga match, but Kepa made his La Liga comeback in the year’s final match against Alaves.
As of now, no one knows if Kepa will permanently join Los Blancos. Courtois was sent for surgery for his torn ACL, which meant he would be out for a long time. As of now, it looks like he will return at the end of the season.
