La Liga 2022-23 Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid: Match Preview, Team News, Possible Lineups, and Prediction

Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid

One of the biggest matches on the European football calendar will take place at Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday evening, as Atletico Madrid welcome Real Madrid for the Madrid derby.

Atletico is currently seventh in the table, boasting 10 points from their opening five matches, while Real Madrid are at the head of the division, collecting 15 points during a perfect start to the campaign.

After losing 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany for a disappointing Champions League outcome, Diego Simeone’s Atletico will be third in Group B. The Red and Whites have had a rather strong start to their 2022–23 La Liga campaign, earning 10 points from their first five games by winning three, drawing one, and losing one. This puts them in seventh place overall, five points behind Real Madrid, heading into their matchup.

Simeone’s team has earned seven points from their last three league contests after defeating Valencia 1-0, drawing with Real Sociedad at 1-1, and defeating Celta Vigo 4-1 most recently. Last weekend’s convincing victory featured goals from Angel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul, and Yannick Carrasco, but Atletico will now face the defending champions, who have an undefeated record through eight games in three different tournaments this season.

As previously established, Real Madrid hasn’t missed a beat in the early going of the 2022-23 season, which got underway on August 10 with a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup. Los Blancos have also won their first five La Liga matches against Almeria, Celta Vigo, Espanyol, Real Betis, and Mallorca to sit atop the table with 15 points from a possible 15. Despite Barcelona’s significant expenditure and clear progress, Los Blancos appear to be the club to beat this season.

The defending champions of Europe have also won their first two Champions League games, defeating Celtic 3-0 on September 6 and RB Leipzig 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Bernabeu.

When Carlo Ancelotti‘s team faced Leipzig last week, they were far from at their best, and they had to wait for the first goal, which came from Federico Valverde in the 80th minute, before Marco Asensio scored in stoppage time to guarantee another three points.

Aurelien Tchouameni joined Real Madrid in a high-profile transaction from Monaco, and Antonio Rudiger joined the team after leaving Chelsea on a free transfer. These were the only two additions the club made over the summer. Although Casemiro was their most charismatic player, the team’s level has remained high this year, thus it will be interesting to watch what the Whites can do.

Atletico Madrid’s possible starting lineup:
Oblak, Reinildo, Witsel, Hermoso, Molina, Llorente, Koke, De Paul, Carrasco, Morata, Felix

Real Madrid’s possible starting lineup:
Courtois, Carvajal, Militao, Alaba, Mendy, Modric, Tchouameni, Kroos, Valverde, Rodrygo, Vinicius
