Emails were reportedly leaked against Manchester City, in which the Premier League title holders were receiving payments from the state of Abu Dhabi. The emails show that Manchester City officials requested payments to be made to the club, through third-party sponsorships. The club reportedly requested £42m in total from shareholders. The City officials mentioned the specific names for the sponsorship routes in order to clear the audit checks.
Manchester City officials reportedly asked for the payments to be transferred in the first week of January. This has revealed the possibility that City might have breached financial rules to receive the funding for several young players. There is an ongoing investigation against the Club, Der Spiegel reported. Manchester City could potentially be relegated from the Premier League if the investigations do not go in their favor as they currently face accusations of misleading information and several financial breaches.
Premier League released a detailed statement of City’s potential breaches in the financial rules from 2009-2018. This was City’s first nine years under the Abu Dhabi ownership. It was also City’s most successful time period since they were established 143 years ago. Manchester City faces a large fine if the accusations are proven right. The club also can also face points deduction or even relegation from the Premier League.
