“If I was Luis Suarez, I’d have done the same thing”- Legendary Ghana forward backs Suarez’s handball at 2010 FIFA World Cup

Asamoah Gyan and Luis Suarez

Suarez deliberately used his hands to obstruct an attempt on goal in South Africa, which prevented Ghana from progressing to the semifinals. Consequently, he was given his marching orders and a penalty was awarded. Gyan stepped up to take the penalty, but unfortunately the attempt went wide of the mark and the match went into extra time and then a shootout.

Gyan said: “I’m a football player and I do understand the game. Back home, everybody who watched the game, they dislike him. I always say if I was Suarez I would have done the same thing to save my country. He’s a hero there.”

How will the Ghana and Uruguay bitter rivalrybe reflected in the crucial group encounter in Qatar?

Ghana and Uruguay

Despite the heroics of Asamoah Gyan, the African side failed to capitalize, and the match finished in a 1-1 draw. The climax of the Ghana-Uruguay rivalry saw Luis Suarez take center stage as the chief antagonist. His deliberate blocking of Dominic Adiyah’s goal-bound shot in the final seconds of extra time led to his immediate dismissal and a penalty kick chance for Ghana.

Asamoah Gyan missed the crucial penalty kick, resulting in Uruguay’s victory in the shootout 4-2. This caused much outrage among the people of Ghana, who were appalled by the behavior of Suarez on the pitch, his subsequent recognition, and his post-game actions. This match has become a constant reminder of the suffering of Ghana and is the primary reason for their strained relationship with Uruguay.

Many Black Star players leading the front lines were in their teenage years when the South African tragedy happened. They will be hoping to take revenge on the Uruguayan by knocking them out of the world cup. Ghana needs a draw and a positive result from the South Korea Vs Portugal game to progress, while the South Americans desperately need the win. But Ghana should go for the win as South Korea has a chance of winning against Portugal. The ROK’s probability of success will double if the Europeans field a weak side to give their starter’s a break before R16.
