After an exceptional start to the season, Arsenal have taken a tumble. The Gunners were on top of a 10-game unbeaten streak before the game against Lens. Mikel Arteta‘s side fell at the hands of Lens after a comeback victory by the hosts. However, Gabriel Jesus gave hope to the visitors. A goal in either half helped Lens to their first win of the campaign.

Following the win, Ligue 1 did not remain silent. The official Twitter handle of Ligue 1 posted a tweet with the caption, “FARMERS LEAGUE STRIKES AGAIN.” The league has been dubbed the “Farmers League” by many Premier League fans. Needless to say, Ligue 1 clubs have fared very well against clubs in the Premier League and others. Arsenal are the latest club to fall victim to a Ligue 1 team.

After the defeat, France and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry shared his take on the game. He said, “The result is not surprising. They (Lens) are a tough team to beat at home, and they showed it today.” Arsenal also received a killer blow through a Bukayo Saka injury. Lens rose to the top in Group B, while Arsenal fell to second.

Arsenal suffer first defeat of the season against Lens

Mikel Arteta and co. arrived at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis with the 3 points in mind. However, heroism from the home side saw the Gunners taste defeat for the first time this season. In a highly contested first half, Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring for Arsenal. After picking up a loose pass from Adrien Thomasson, Saka played Jesus through to make it 1-0.

However, Thomasson made up for his mistake just 10 minutes later. David Raya’s mistake ended up being punished by the home side. In the second half, Lens pushed through for a second goal. Subsequently, Elye Wahi answered the home side’s prayers. The 20-year-old caught Raya off-guard with a first-time finish.

Lens keeper Brice Samba kept Arsenal out multiple times in the second half. The visitors also suffered a huge loss through the injury of Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal #7 was forced off the pitch in the 34th minute. Their coach, Mikel Arteta, commented that his injury does not look good. Arsenal will face Manchester City on Sunday and will be missing their star man.
