Lionel Messi has apologized to his teammates after being suspended for travelling to Saudi Arabia just a day after Paris Saint-Germain’s loss to Lorient. Messi explained that the team would have a day off after the game as usual. He also said that he had already cancelled the trip once before.

“I thought we would have a day off after the game, as always. The trip was organized, and I couldn’t cancel it. I had already cancelled it before. I apologize to my teammates, and I’m waiting for what the club wants to do with me,” said the Argentine superstar.

Messi’s absence came at a crucial time for PSG, as they are in a tight race for the Ligue 1 title. His decision to travel to Saudi Arabia, especially considering his subpar performances since the World Cup, has drawn severe criticism from fans.

How PSG and its fans will respond to Messi’s apology and suspension remains to be seen. While some may be forgiving, others may be less sympathetic, given the team’s recent struggles. However, Messi is set to depart the club regardless of the response. He is not expected to extend his contract, and there are only five games remaining this season.

According to coach Christophe Galtier, Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain will discuss the Argentine player’s next move with the club following his return from suspension.

“We’ll see when Leo returns what will happen,” Galtier said. “Obviously, there will be discussions with the entire club but also with Leo. He is the primary person involved.” Galtier stated that the club informed him that Messi had been suspended, but he declined to say whether he agreed with the decision. “I did not have to make the decision,” the coach said. “I was informed of the decision.”

Messi, 35, joined PSG in 2021 after winning every major award with FC Barcelona. The Catalans could not afford to keep him due to massive debts and Spanish league financial constraints. However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is reportedly trying to manufacture a return for the club legend.
